Career Planning Advice

from Michelle Desmarais, Youth Employment Consultant

"Life belongs to the living, and he who lives must be prepared for changes."
(Johann Wolfgang von Goethe)

If I had a dime for every time I learned that someone had fallen into their career with little or no planning, that they took a job at some point in their life and that it became their career, well I might not be a millionaire, but I would be getting a lot closer. Career planning is often forgotten or overlooked because reality dictates that to survive and support our families we must work and earn a living. What many of us don't plan for or anticipate is that this work often becomes our career, whether we wanted it to be or not.

"Real success is finding your lifework in the work that you love." (David McCullough)

Career planning or making conscious choices about what type of work or school you pursue can benefit anyone regardless of your age, education or skill level. Career planning examines who you are, where your interests, strengths, values and abilities lie, potential careers that exist based on your strengths and what education is needed for those careers. Making career choices that fit your personality may not be the easiest route, and it may take more time and effort, but in the end, it will make all the difference in the world.

"Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself." (Leo Tolstoy)
