Eligibility Terminology

Terms we use at The Career Centre when we talk about "eligibility":

Employment Insurance (EI):
Administered by the Federal Government - Service Canada (formerly HRSDC)

Active EI:
You have currently established an Employment Insurance (EI) claim and are receiving EI payments.

Reachback (RB):
You have received Employment Insurance benefits within the past 3 years, or the past 5 years if it was a Maternity or Parental Benefit.

BC Employment and Assistance:
Administered by the Provincial Government's Ministry of Human Resources.

Employment Assistance:
You are receiving Provincial Employment Assistance (EA):

Mutual:
If your financial assistance is a combination of Federal Employment Insurance and BC Employment Assistance, you are a "Mutual Client". This may mean that you have a low Employment Insurance claim and are eligible for BC Employment Assistance as well, or that you are a Federal "Reachback Client" and are currently receiving BC Employment Assistance.

"No Benefits" or "Regular Client":
You are not in receipt of Employment Insurance or BC Employment Assistance.

Employment Maintenance - One of the four dimensions of employment services which focuses on skills, attributes and barriers to securing and maintaining long term employment.

Service Canada (formerly HRSDC) - The federal government department that provides funding and support for many programs for the unemployed.

Skill Enhancement - One of the four dimensions of employment services which looks at education and training for employment purposes.

Unemployed - An individual is considered 'unemployed' if they are a) working less than an average of 20 hours per week; and b) are actively seeking full-time employment.



 
Job Search Terms

DOE - Depends on Experience , referring to wages for the position.

Employment Consultant - An experienced career professional who is skilled in assessing job search, skill and career needs and return to work action plan development in order to provide assistance to an individual's employment needs.

Employment Needs Assessment - An initial meeting with an employment consultant to determine your particular job search, skill enhancement or career decision making needs.

FT - Full Time

Job Creation Partnership (JCP) - A Service Canada (formerly HRSDC) program that provides temporary employment to unemployed individuals to enhance skills development, experience and networking skills, while continuing to seek permanent work.

Job Search - The process of looking for work, from resumes and job interviews to finding jobs in a particular job market and securing employment. Job Search is one of the four dimensions of employment services.

NEG - Negotiable wages

PT - Part Time

Return to Work Action Plan - A career professional assisted plan of action for unemployed individuals to return to work. An action plan identifies an individuals goals, strengths, weaknesses, barriers to employment and specific steps to re-employment. Steps may include vocational counseling and programs/workshops.

Wage Subsidy - A Service Canada (formerly HRSDC) program in which an employer enters into an agreement with Service Canada to provide an individual with employment in which a portion of their wage is subsidized byService Canadawhile on the job training is provided.



Career Terms

Career Assessment - A tool used in career decision making and career exploration to determine which jobs are suitable to your skills, values and interests.

Career Decision Making - The process of career exploration in order to make decisions about career change and career development. Career Decision Making is one of the four dimensions of employment services.

Career Exploration - The activity of researching and investigating the nature of particular careers and determining what skills, interests and values are necessary to work in a particular field. Career exploration is a starting point activity for those interested in a career change, or starting a new career.

Career Pathway - A roadmap, or set of steps to follow in order to achieve your career goals.

Field of Work - A name for a group of closely related industries. e.g. Sales, Education

Industry - The category of a companies primary business activity. (ie. The Auto Industry, The Electronics industry)

Occupation - The kind of work that identifies a person's principle work activity. (e.g. Electrician)

Occupational Profile - A real world description of an occupation used in career exploration to determine the nature, skills required and day to day work of a particular occupation.

Myers-Briggs - a personality test based on Jung's typology of classifying personality as a mixture of Extraversion/Introversion, Sensing/Intuition, Thinking/Feeling and Judging/Perceiving. This test can be used as a guideline to understand career and skill aptitudes.

Sector - An industry

Sector Council - An association which provides human resources information about an industry.
