Aquaculture Training

In June 2012 the Provincial Government provided funding for sixty people on northern Vancouver Island to take a 25-week training program to learn the skills necessary to work as technicians in the aquaculture industry.

This project was designed to help participants secure permanent employment in the aquaculture industry while helping local employers meet labour demands. This intensive program creates additional opportunities for these communities to offer training to local participants, while meeting local demand. As part of the program, participants will be placed with local aquaculture employers for a two-week practicum and will be assisted with longer-term job search activities.

The aquaculture technician diploma program is being offered by Excel Career College in three areas of Vancouver Island: Port Alberni, Port Hardy and Campbell River.

Students in Port Alberni can start on Oct 29th, Nov 5th, Nov 19th, Nov 26th, Dec  3rd or Dec 10th
In Campbell River students can start on Nov 26th, Dec 3rd, Dec 10, Dec 17th, Jan 7th or Jan 21st
In Port Hardy students can start on Oct 29th, Nov 19th, Nov 26th or Dec 3rd

New Employment Skills Access Programs at VIU

Unemployed? Employed with no recognized certification or university degree-level education? Vancouver Island University (VIU) continues to receive funding from the Province for the Employment Skills Access (ESA) program. VIU offers training programs that are specifically selected to help unemployed, non-Employment Insurance clients and employed individuals requiring skills-upgrading to gain or improve employment.

Tuition and materials are available for participants that meet the criteria of the ESA program. The current programs offered through EAS funding are:

Introduction to Culinary Arts Program

This 12-week program will provide students with the skills and knowledge required to fill entry level culinary and food service positions.

Marine Operator Training Program

Participants will gain knowledge and skills that meet the standards as outlined by Transport Canada to work on, and operate a commercial vessel.

Low Energy Electrical Foundation Training

The overall objective of the program is to prepare participants with the skills and knowledge required for entry level employment in the low energy electrical field, such as: automation and control, data cabling and networking, irrigation controls, entertainment systems, landscape lighting.

Building Service Worker

The primary focus of the program is learning and practicing the specific skills required for building service workers (including WHMIS and OFA). In addition, the program supports student success through the Foundation Skills Training course that will orient participants to the building service industry.

Skills Connect for Immigrants Program

If you have become a permanent resident of Canada within the last 5 years and are seeking meaningful employment and/or skills upgrading and training, Skills Connect for Immigrants offered through The Immigrant Welcome Centre may be the program for you.

Eligibility Criteria:

-You became a permanent resident of Canada within the last 5 years; and;
-You are unemployed or under employed; and
-Have an intermediate level of English language proficiency

If you are eligible the program will provide:

-Assessments for language, qualifications and training requirements
-Career counseling and career planning services
-Job seeking skills and support
-An introduction to Canadian workplace culture
-Training funds for upgrading or job specific skills training
-Assistance with regulating bodies or certification
-Networking and help finding employment opportunities

Job Options Program

Are you unemployed and have no attachment to Employment Insurance (have not established a regular EI claim in the last three years and have not established a maternity or parental claim in the past five years)? Job Options is a six-week program that will help you get back to work!

At no cost to you, Job Options will open up new employment possibilities by helping you:

• Access up-to-date local labour market information
• Develop an inventory of skills
• Complete extensive self assessments
• Focus on career options and direction
• Learn tips and tricks to access the hidden job market
• Prepare to sell yourself in a job interview

Eligibility requirements:

• 18 years of age or older
• unemployed
• non-EI eligible clients (have not established a regular EI claim in the last three years and have not established a maternity or parental claim in the past five years)
• legally entitled to work in Canada
• living in the Oceanside area
• not a student

The next intake for the Oceanside area is scheduled for AUGUST 13, 2012.

Vancouver Island University Adult Basic Education

Vancouver Island University’s Adult Basic Education program is offering courses in English, Math and Science.

Adult Basic Education (ABE) courses are for adults who wish to:

  • Complete prerequisite courses needed for further study

Customer Service & Tourism BladeRunners Program

Customer Service & Tourism BladeRunners is a program that builds community partnerships and connects motivated, job ready youth with valuable employment opportunities in the Customer Service and Tourism field.

Eligibility requirements:

  • Age 16-30 and not attending school
  • Out of work
  • No EI attachment
  • Little or no skill based training/certificates or work experience
  • Barriers to successful attachment to the work world
  • Must attend one of the information sessions in order to be considered for the program

Participants will:

  • Participate in four weeks of paid in-class skill enhancement (beginning July 09, 2012)
  • Receive a work clothing allowance
  • Have the opportunity for a 2 week/ 54 hours of work experience placement
  • Obtain First Aid, WHMIS, World Host, Cashier Training and other related tickets and group based employability skills
  • Receive individual support and guidance

Employers will:

  • Connect with job ready and motivated youth

Workplace Training Program: Retail and Tourism

This new workplace training initiative directly addresses the current needs of businesses in the Retail and Food & Beverage sectors. At no cost to the employer, the Workplace Training Program (WTP), managed locally by Vancouver Island University, will provide staff training in: customer service excellence, effective communication, problem solving, professionalism and initiative, efficiency, product knowledge and sales (up-selling and cross-selling). This program was developed with the endorsement and input of sector associations and experts. CFUW Accepting Scholarship Applications

The Canadian Federation of University Women Parksville-Qualicum (CFUW) is inviting applications for their 2012 Scholarship Awards. Seven scholarships are being offered in School District 69, including two return to school bursaries for women: $2,000 will be awarded in late July 2012 to two women from District 69 resuming their education immediately following an absence of at least two consecutive years. Candidates must be registered at an accredited Canadian school/college/university, where the award will be paid to the registrar for the 2012-2013 academic year. For details and eligibility, see the Canadian Federation of University Women Parksville-Qualicum website. The application deadline is June 1, 2012.

Aspect Targeted Skills Shortage Program

This new program has been created for small business through the Canada – British Columbia Labour Market Agreement. The TSSP is focused on helping small businesses and non-profit organizations grow the potential of their low skilled employees by providing access to funded training for eligible staff.

What is the Targeted Wage Subsidy Program (TSSP)?

Designed to help small business (fewer than 100 employees) grow the potential of their low-skilled workers by funding recognized training needed by organization. Their eligible employees can have grade 12 but nothing beyond that led to recognized certification.

Each eligible employee can access up to $1500 to be used towards training courses that are specific to the employee’s workplace need. The maximum an employer can receive is $7500 so they can have multiple employees in training.

Eligibility

Organization – Must identify with one of the following sectors:
- Professional, Scientific and Technical Services
- Healthcare and Social Assistance
- Transportation and Warehousing
- Manufacturing

Employee
- Grade 12 or less
- No recognized certification
- Can only participate once

Process

- Meet with Targeted Skills Shortage Program Coordinator to determine eligibility and establish training requirements
- Training Coordinator to arrange for courses and schedule – plan can be modified
- Employee takes training
- Employee must receive certification of some nature
- Employee must be at arms-length from training provider
- PCTIA preferred
- Cannot access if on wage subsidy
