Blogging Your Way to a Job

Friday, April 20th, 2007

An article in the Friday, April 20, 2007 Nanaimo Daily News titled, Blogging a growing trend, got me thinking how blogging could help you in your job search. Reading industry and company blogs is a great way to keep on top of labour market trends. This Nanaimo Daily News article features the GoNanaimo.com blog. I checked out the GoNanaimo blog and the most recent story posted is about the new construction of a high-end condo complex. This is great recent labour market information and if I was looking for construction work I might go and hand in a resume at the job site.

Also starting a blog could get you noticed. Are you an expert in your field? Start a blog and show off all your talents. Some free blogging sites are www.Blogger.com, www.Wordpress.com, www.TypePad.com and www.LiveJournal.com

The top headline in the Monday, April 16th issue of the Nanaimo Daily News was “Where are all the Workers?” The article indicated that:

A lack of skilled trades workers is stalling some construction projects in Nanaimo, including a 24-storey condo tower on Front Street.

The main issue seems to be that there is a shortage of journeyman and the lag time that will occur to get the new workers entering the industry trained.  Gerry Bisschoff, owner of Miranda Construction was quoted as saying:

“So you spend a lot of time training and of course your productivity goes down and you get further and further behind.” He thinks that until more companies start training less-experienced workers, delays will continue.

The Latest on the Trucking Industry

Thursday, April 12th, 2007

Thinking of pursuing a career in trucking and looking at training options? Recently, the Canadian Trucking Human Resources Council (CTHRC) developed national occupational standards for professional truck drivers, dispatchers, professional driver trainers and transportation safety professionals. These occupational standards describe the skills and knowledge required for these positions and will ensure the industry has qualified, competent drivers. The CTHRC also lists truck driving schools that train to these standards.

On a similar note an article in the Saturday April 7, 2007 Times Colonist indicates that the transportation industry is growing and there will be a labour shortage in the near future.

The Vancouver-based Western Transportation Advisory Council (Westac) anticipates 80,000 vacancies over the next three to five years in just logistics management, not to mention the need for 37,000 new truck drivers this year.
