BC is calling

Friday, May 18th, 2007

The signals of the changing labour market are loud and clear. You’ve probably noticed the advertising produced by the Province of British Columbia encouraging BCer’s to call and promote our economy to friends and family living in other Provinces. The Website www.bciscalling.ca lists 10 reasons to live in BC and asks you to help BC attract the workers it needs.

In conjunction with this campaign the Government is promoting another new website www.workbc.ca, BC’s online guide to employment resources. The WorkBC Website has resources and links for career seekers in BC. The news release for this website indicates that

“Over the upcoming months, more tools and resources will be added to WorkBC.ca. The enhancements include an employer’s tool kit on human resource issues, a parent’s guide to career development and a meta job search function, which will transform WorkBC.ca into a virtual job marketplace”

Green Jobs in Demand

Friday, May 18th, 2007

Lately global warming, our environment and the high cost of energy are issues that have being getting a lot of attention in the media and in our everyday conversations. The growing need for environmental, cost efficient alternatives will in turn create the requirement for experts in the field of renewable energy. An article on working.com is another indication that the green economy may offer new jobs. This fall at Selkirk College’s campus in Nelson there will be a new program offered to train Renewable Energy Technicians

“The courses cover all the basic theory on energy, electricity, safety, and electrical code required to start a career safely and legally in the emerging field of renewable energy technology,” said Robert Macrae, School of Renewable Resources instructor at Selkirk College.”

One local entrepreneur that is already betting on the need for alternate sources for energy to run vehicles is Randy Holmquist, President of Vancouver Island –based Canadian Electric Vehicle. A recent article in the May 2007 Business Vancouver Island indicates that

“Holmquist, with the help of the National Research Council’s Industrial Research Assistance Program, has been producing commercial vehicles since 2000…. [and he] has recently seen a surge in demand due to soaring gasoline prices.”

Mandatory Retirement Eliminated

Friday, May 4th, 2007

Last week the Provincial Government announced that mandatory retirement will be eliminated by January 1, 2008.  This will mean that employees over the age of 65 will be protected under the Human Rights Code and have the option to keep working. This change in legislation will be a benefit to both employers and job seekers. With the current labour shortages employers are looking to baby boomers to fill the gaps. Also with the rising cost of living (according to the 2007 Parksville Community Profile the average sale price of a home rose 14% between 2005 and 2006) it may be a necessity for some people over 65 to continue working to continue to have the lifestyle they would prefer.
