2010-2020 B.C. Labour Market Outlook Released

The Provincial Government has recently posted Labour Market Outlook for 2010 to 2020 on the WorkBC.ca website and over one million job openings are expected in B.C. from 2010 to 2020. It is estimated that 66% of these job openings will be due to replacement demand and the rest will be from expansion. Across B.C. the largest number of job openings are expected in:

• Sales and Service Occupations
• Business, Finance and Administration Occupations
• Trades, Transport and Equipment Operators and Related Occupations

The three occupation groups expected to experience the strongest growth in demand in the province are:

• Health occupations
• Natural and Applied Sciences and Related Occupations
• Occupations in Art, Culture, Recreation and Sport

The greatest number of job openings is expected in occupations requiring some post-secondary education, college or trade certificate. Approximately 78% of job openings will require some post-secondary.

Of course no projection can be completely accurate, but being aware of this information can assist a job seeker make a more educated decision in their future.

B.C.’s Green Economy

The features banner on WorkBC.ca (The Government of British Columbia’s source for labour market information) is always a great place to look for news on our economy. One recent feature is B.C.’s green economy focusing on the Globe Foundation’s British Columbia’s Green Economy report. The key sectors in the province’s green economy are highlighted in this report as well as “information about employment, regional activity, green resource opportunities and growth potential.” Some highlights include:

  • BC’s green economy was responsible for nearly 166,000 direct and indirect full-time jobs in 2008 – equal to 7.2% of total provincial employment
  • The largest number of green jobs can be found in the areas that include wholesale trade for green products, professional environment-related services and research, administrative and support services, green construction, and public transit and ground passenger transportation
  • With an average annual green labour force growth rate of 2.6 %, jobs in BC’s green economy would grow from 166,000 in 2008 to 225,000 by 2020.

With the need for skilled employees in this field on the rise, post secondary institutions in B.C. are adding more green educational programs to their calendars. B.C. Trade Occupations Outlook is Strong

The Provincial Government recently released a labour market analysis for trades occupations from 2009 to 2019. The summary of the B.C. Trade Occupations Outlook states “the trades employment outlook in British Columbia over the next 10 years is strong, with expectations that trades demand will grow at a faster rate than the provincial average.”

The labour needs will “vary considerably by region…In Vancouver Island-Coast, nearly a quarter (24.2%) of the regional demand will be carpenters and cabinetmakers, while in Northeast it is heavy equipment operators that accounts for the most significant demand share.”
