Vancouver Island University Adult Basic Education

Vancouver Island University’s Adult Basic Education program is offering courses in English, Math and Science.

Adult Basic Education (ABE) courses are for adults who wish to:

  • Complete prerequisite courses needed for further study
  • Obtain a graduation certificate
  • Prepare for employment
  • Refresh their skills and confidence for work or further studies
  • Reach a personal goal

Tuition-free, courses in English, math and science are offered on a continuous basis throughout the year at the Parksville/Qualicum Campus, 100 Jensen Ave. E. Parksville, B.C.

Admission Requirements:

Minimum 17 years of age and out of school for one year
Or
High school graduate

Attention Employers:

Service Canada has launched its Canada Summer Jobs Program for 2010. Applications will be accepted up to February 26th.

Canada Summer Jobs is federal government program that provides funding for not-for-profit organizations, public-sector employers and small businesses with 50 or fewer employees to create high-quality summer job opportunities for students ages of 15 to 30 who intend to return to their studies in the next school year.

Staff at Service Canada will assess each application based on the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria, including local priorities and a rating scale.

Service Canada Centre for Youth Casual Labour Program

The Service Canada Centre for Youth, located at 201-60 Front Street, is open 8:30 to 4:30 Monday to Friday and anyone from 15 – 30 can visit their centre and use their job search services. This year the Centre is offering a Casual Labour Program.  Casual labour is any work that lasts less than 24 hours in total, it’s a great option to gain skills and make some money while you seek full time summer employment. Call the Centre to register (250) 754-0222, Local 477. To be included in the casual labour pool you need to call every morning and your name will be added to the list.

Nanaimo Service Canada Centre for Youth Now Open

A Service Canada Centre for Youth is now open at Suite #201, 60 Front Street in Nanaimo. The primary mandate of the Youth Centre is to assist students in their search for summer employment by connecting them with local employers and helping them prepare their resumes. The office is open Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 4:00pm until August 21st. Also check out the Student/Youth Service Canada Job Bank.
