The Tutoring Program
With the support of government funding, the Career Centre is pleased to offer The Tutoring Program!
The Tutoring Program provides free, one-on-one and virtual tutoring for those who require support with reading, spelling, writing, grammar, math, basic computer skills as well as English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL).
The Tutoring Program is ideal for:
Adults (18+ years) from District 69 (Nanoose to Bowser), who require language support and may be:
• improving their literacy and/or numeracy skills for any reason
• upgrading their education at the high school, college and/or university level
• learning basic computer skills
• learning ESL
• studying for certification tests for any trade
• studying for re-certification tests for current employers
Program Hours:
The Tutoring Program is accessible weekdays, Monday through Friday 8:30am to 4:30pm.
Would you like to become a Tutor?
Our tutors receive free training and and are well-equipped to address a wide variety of learning needs and challenges.
Our tutors are local adults with vast and varied backgrounds. They have excellent ability with the English language and/or basic mathematics. They range from retired educators and professionals to those interested in helping others and staying connected in our community.
FREE TUTOR TRAINING SESSIONS:
The Tutoring Program offers Tutor Training Sessions twice a year, is 12 hours in length and held over four consecutive Fridays. Topics covered include: foundational literacy skills in reading, writing, and oral communication; English as a Second Language; the adult learner; inter-cultural communication; activity and lesson planning for learners of different levels; completing student progress reports; tips and tools for virtual teaching and learning; and video conferencing using Zoom, Skype, Google or FaceTime.

Since 1989, The Tutoring Program has supported 2,100+ students and trained more than 1,000 volunteer tutors.
The Tutoring Program is supported with funding from the Ministry of Advanced Education’s Community Adult Literacy Program.
