Canadian Electric Vehicles Ltd. – October 2021

Tell us about your business/organization and what makes you stand out as an employer?

Canadian Electric Vehicles Ltd. (canEV)  is British Columbia’s original electric vehicle company!  Founded in 1995 in Errington, BC we have been designing and building zero emission electric vehicles and products for more than 25 years.  With electric now driving the car industry, there is surging demand for electrifying everything else – from work trucks and equipment to classic cars.  canEV is expanding both its consumer and commercial product lines to service its local and international customers.

How many employees do you have?

We are a team of six and are currently hiring for various positions.

What do you look for in a new employee?

We seek people who are focused on successful outcomes for the work they do, learning and perfecting skills and abilities, and being an effective communicator to enable our team environment.  We are a small company that is growing: each one of our team members serves and important role in our team.  We are looking for individuals who can work outside a narrow job description and are multi-talented.  Your interest in zero-emission vehicles and sustainability will enable the fit with our team, and company philosophy.

What advice would you give someone who wants to work for your organization?

If you have an interest in electric vehicles we would recommend working with anything related to gain experience whether that be joining your local electric vehicle association, events, or on-line video streaming (youtube.com) to learn more about EVs, or getting direct hands on experience.  Convert a bike to an e-bike or build a battery powered radio-controlled model; better yet convert a car to electric.  Any experience with electric motors and lithium batteries is helpful.  In regard to education, mechatronics and automation courses give a broader scope compared to mechanical or electrical engineering/technology.  Any related engineering, technology background education combined with personal hands-on experience either from work, EV associations or hobbies is attractive.

Do you anticipate hiring in the next 6 months? If so, for what types of positions?

  • Technologists and Engineers in Mechanical, Electrical and Mechatronics
  • Metal fabricators
  • Parts/Supply Chain Coordinators
  • Customer Service and Administration

September 20 Hot Sheet

The days of autumn are cooling off, but local employment opportunities are definitely not.  The most recent Career Centre Hot Sheet highlights a multitude of links for local job postings, job boards and job indexes.

SEPTEMBER 2021 TIP OF THE MONTH

September is Disability Employment month in British Columbia, and the Career Centre is celebrating our inclusive employers and the important contributions individuals with disabilities are making in the workplace. Watch for our employer panel discussion that will be airing in the second half of September where we speak with three local employers about their experiences with, and the benefits of, having an inclusive and diverse workplace. More than a half million British Columbians live with some form of disability including physical, mental and emotional. Individuals in the workforce may still face discriminatory and/or illegal business practices and/or policies.

Numerous studies indicate hiring strategies that include a diverse and inclusive workforce have proven beneficial. Businesses have seen measured increases in relevance, innovation and adaptability, among other areas, by proactively creating a culture of inclusion, which also extends to workers with disabilities. Companies and organizations that have a diverse workforce are often perceived as better employers and enjoy a more positive reputation in their community.

Employers often have questions around supporting employees with disabilities and what job accommodations look like. Many times there is funding available for select accommodations.

Questions for businesses to consider include:

  • What limitations is the employee experiencing?
  • How do these limitations affect the employee and the employee’s job performance?
  • What specific job tasks are problematic as a result of these limitations?
  • What accommodations are available to reduce or eliminate these problems? Are all possible resources being used to determine possible accommodations?
  • Has the employee been consulted regarding possible accommodations?
  • Once accommodations are in place, would it be useful to meet with the employee to evaluate the effectiveness of the accommodations and to determine whether additional accommodations are needed?
  • Do supervisory personnel and employees need training?

(Job Accommodation Network, askjan.org)

Job accommodations can be something as simple as modifying job tasks or work schedules. Sometimes accommodations can include assistive technologies, such as telephone headsets or adjustable height desks. We work with the Neil Squire Society who provides services designed to assist individuals stay or re-enter the workforce with suitable accommodations.

Questions? We can help. If you are an individual with a disability wondering about your options or pathway into the workforce, give us a call. Are you an employer who would like to learn more about programs available to assist you in supporting workers with disabilities? We want to hear from you!
